Not much is known of poem's origin or author. I thought I'd research and annotate it. My notes are in italics, intertwined with the poem.

Conclusion: based on the poet's claim that "three of us are waiting now" and the death info of the team that I currently know, the likely author candidates are:

R.C. Samsel - d. 1966

Orrin Magill - d. 1976

A.C. Samsel - d. 1980

and that the poem must have been written before R.C.'s death in June of 1966.

Close, but note quite. From official publications of the two schools there's a difference of one game. Or not. And the records for results in their respective cities are also off. Even UT doesn't agree with itself. I'm not sure why there's a difference in the UT "at Knoxville" and "at Nashville" numbers between the 2016 Media Guide and the Game Day Notes.

So, can all of this be explained? Probably. I entered all the info into a spreadsheet to see where the differences were.

Let's look at the difference of the one game. Vandy claims a win in the 1918 game. And a trouncing it was.

UT had an unofficial team during the 1917-18 seasons. The team, made up of Army recruits and students had their one away game of the 1918 season in Nashville, where they got whooped. The best that I can tell is that the games those seasons don't count in the official UT records, but that one game does in Vandy football history.

From UT's 1919 yearbook we have a bit more detail about the 1918 season.
One of the local Knoxville papers says the score was 12-0 in favor of Vanderbilt. Some things never change. There's an "unjust decision by the referee" (from Vanderbilt) that caused UT to lose the ball near the goal line.
The results of this exercise sound like I'm beating up on Vanderbilt's Athletic Media staff. Not at all. I found some errors that I feel should be corrected for future editions. UT vs Vandy in Nashville: 37-19-4
It was the first time the two teams met. It was a last contest for UT that season, who were 3-3-1 going into that game.

The teams tied, 6-6. Not unheard of, but the game was called on count of darkness.

They included a link to This Day in #Vols History (October 15) and this great photo of the 1892 UT football team.

Now, the post can be parsed a few different ways. The Vols won their first-ever football game on this date in 1892! On Oct. 15, 1892 Tennessee beat Maryville College, 25-0.

The Vols won their first-ever football game? No. They played against Sewanee on Nov. 21, 1891, losing the game in Chattanooga.

The Vols won their first-ever football game on this date? Yes, that's true, but vague.

Maybe a better way to say it would be: In their second-ever football game the Vols got their first win... A little clunky.

Bottom line, this is the program's first-ever win. It was played on Saturday, October 15, 1892. The team played at Maryville College, giving them a beat down.

Let's see what the Knoxville paper has to say.

Reading the accounts we see that a TD was worth 4 points. A kick after the TD (a kick goal) was worth 2. And a drop kick was worth 5 points. Okay, I'll go with that.

That would be the first of many meetings.

The 1916 season found UT going undefeated with a 8-0-1 record, while getting five shutouts.

Interesting to see the officiating crew was from other schools. Arnold from Auburn as referee, Coles from Clemson as umpire, and Ramey from Purdue as head linesman. There was another school in town that sported a football team. Knoxville College, a historically black liberal arts school, offered an educational opportunity for the African-American community.

I don't know much about the athletics at Knoxville College. I came across this 1938 annual at the Digital Public Library of America and thought that it should be shared. I'll be showing the images and game summaries from the 1937 season.

"... recalled a game in 1974 when the Artful Dodger (Condredge Holloway) led the Vols to a comeback win over Tulsa."

Hmm. That would be fun to track down. A quick search through GenealogyBank.com showed that the game was played in early October. Helps to narrow it down. In fact, it was played on October 5, 1974.

It isn't clear in the newspaper article that Holloway led the Vols to a
comeback victory. It was tied at 10 each in the fourth quarter. It
wasn't until Morgan's punt return for a touch down in the final minute of the game that UT regained the lead.

UT's on-line repository of yearbooks had a photo of reserve QB Randy Wallace.

Volunteer - 1975

Wait. What would the reserve QB be doing in the game? The Vols started the season 1-1-1. They wanted to win. Why the reserve QB?

Condredge Holloway was banged up in the first few games. Knee and shoulder injuries plagued him.

Mobile Register - October 10, 1974

In fact, he sustained bruised ribs in the Tulsa game and spent the night at the hospital. I guess that's a good enough reason to use the reserve QB.
All of this still doesn't answer the question, "Did Condredge Holloway lead the Vols to a comeback win over Tulsa?"

Part of sports is the fond memories that we have of them, of the people we were with, of the victories, the spectacular plays. In the big scheme of things sometimes it doesn't really matter who led which team to what victory.

UT beat Tulsa that day. And Rick Barnes remembers it his way.

There was a student team lead by W.B. Stokely. The 2013 UT football media guide lists six games for the 1895 season. Here's one that they haven't included. I assume that they just didn't know about it.

The (current) Tennessee School for the Deaf went toe to toe with the University school boys and ended in a 10-10 tie. I'm not up on football of the mid 1890s but a few things stood out to me from the article. There is not a quarterback listed. Also, each team made two touchdowns and a goal. How many points was a touchdown worth in 1895? And what exactly was a goal? Could the reporter have been wrong and they each made a touchdown (and PAT) plus a field goal? That would make it 10-10. More research is needed.

UPDATE: I did a bit more research. The day before, the notice that a game would be played appeared in The Knoxville Daily Journal.

Both articles mention the University school. Perhaps this was a college prep school run by the Universty?

The Tennessee School for the Deaf lists three games that they played in 1895. All three were against the University of Tennessee. The scores are:
18-0
10-10
0-0

for a 1-0-2 record.

Now the question is to see if I can identify which game this is.

Here's what Shields-Watkins Field looked like in 1938 after the East Stands were constructed, adding 12,030 seats in 44 rows.

The next big expansion came ten years later with the construction of 15,000 seats in the south end zone.

So, the game film is from between 1938 and 1947. I've asked TAMIS what they can tell me about the film reel, how they determined that it was from 1942. Assuming that it was from that year, or perhaps a year before or after, let's see what was happening with the team.

John Barnhill was the new head coach and led the team to a 8-2 record in 1941 and a 9-1-1 record in 1942. Due to the war UT did not field a team in 1943
Back in the middle of October Bradley Reeves of the Tennessee Archive of Moving Image and Sound (TAMIS), posted a short video on facebook.

The text that accompanied the post said:

<span class="fbPhotosPhotoCaption" data-ft="{"tn":"*G","type":45}" id="fbPhotoPageCaption" tabindex="0">A
great 8mm home movie shot in Knoxville, Tennessee during the early
1960s. Look out for behind the scenes footage of the filming of the
James Agee-inspired film "All the Way Home", a classic UT football game,
and the late Martin Hunt himself in a blazing red coat, hanging around
with his aunt Mary Gill.

Hmmm. Which classic UT football game? The film shows a marching band, some football plays with the opponents in blue jerseys, UT cheerleaders, the UT marching band, a few more plays, then the scoreboard.

Ah, they were playing Kentucky in Knoxville.

But when? The text only indicated that it was the early 1960s. This is when the 2014 UT Football Media Guide comes in real handy. UT and UK alternated sites, with UT hosting the even years during this time period. I looked and looked through the guide but couldn't find a listing of the game with that sort of scoring configuration. Then I noticed that the 1962 season didn't have a game listed against UK. The W-L Results don't add up. The score totals don't add up. But if you were to insert the Kentucky game info (Date: Nov. 24, Site: Knoxville), with a final score of 10-12, then things are in sync.
The UK yearbook shows several of the players hoisting "The Barrel" a symbolic trophy used from 1925 until the late 1990s when a tragic, alcohol involved traffic accident took the life of a UK player. UK took a firm stand against student athletes and alcohol abuse and the barrel trophy was retired. From the Abe Thompson scrapbook (available at the Kentucky Digital Library), come these first two undated photos. I'm assuming that they are from 1924, mostly based on the official in image 63 (white shirt). You can see a similar person in the UT Yearbook photo at the end.
From William F. Hall, Sr.'s book A Venture of Faith - History of Harrison Chilhowee Baptist Academy:

Football was played in various places until 1947; when Huskey Memorial Field was made for a football gridiron in memory of Clell Huskey, former student and athlete who was killed in action in North Africa, May 6, 1943*. The field was made possible by his family giving his government insurance money toward its construction.

Many young men pass through this gate on Friday nights, ready to take battle on the football field.
I wonder how many of them look up and know who Clell Huskey was, and what his sacrifice means to them and to all of us.

* - Mr. Hall was mistaken on the date of Clell's death.
